Scouting Washington

CHICAGO – The Red Stars will host Washington Spirit for the first time in both teams last match up of the series. The match will kick off on Sunday, July 1, at 5 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast live on the NWSL app and the go90 app.

Here are a couple things to look for in Washington:

Bottom of the Barrel
Midway through the season, Washington Spirit have only 10 points to show for, winning just two matches and tying four. Currently, the Spirit sit in eighth place, just above Sky Blue FC. For the second season, Washington has been struggling to gain any momentum to get out of the bottom of the table. After Chicago, the next two matches for the Spirit to face will be against the current first and second-place teams in North Carolina and Orlando, respectively.

Scoreless Streak
In the last four matches, Washington has failed to get on the scoreboard, totaling seven matches where the Spirit have been scoreless.  This all plays part because of the absence of U.S. Women’s National Team forward Mallory Pugh, who has been out the past four matches due to a knee injury. Washington has had to rely on the attack of Estefania Banini and Ashley Hatch, who both have only scored one goal each in that time frame. Midfielder Rose Lavelle has also been in and out this season, not competing in the last match for the Spirit.
