Sam Kerr nominated for ‘The Don’ Award

CHICAGO- The Sport Australia Hall of Fame recently announced eight finalists for ‘The Don’ Award, with Sam Kerr of the Chicago Red Stars named as a finalist.

‘The Don’ is given to an Australian whose achievements have most inspired the nation. According to The Sport Australia Hall of Fame, Kerr earned her nomination by confirming her status as “the most successful, watchable and inspirational female footballer Australia has produced.”

“It is an honor and a privilege to be named a finalist for The Don Award,” Kerr said in the press release by Sport Australia Hall of Fame. “This is such a prestigious award and as an Australian athlete, the nomination means so much to me.”

In the NWSL Kerr won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive season with 16 goals in 20 matches. She also became the only player in NWSL history to score 50 goals in her career.

For the Westfield Matildas, Kerr set a national record by scoring 12 goals in 7 successive games. In the 2018 Asian Cup Kerr notched three goals in five games en route to leading Australia to the Asian Cup Final and helped her nation qualify for the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Kerr is the only soccer player nominated for the award. The winner will be revealed at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame 34th Induction and Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday, October 11.
