Chicago, Il. – The Red Stars are taking to the road for their first away match of the young National Women’s Soccer League season when they meet FC Kansas City Wednesday night at 7pm.
The Red Stars are coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss at home on Saturday to the Washington Spirit, after defeating WNY Flash 1-0 at home the week before. FC Kansas City has managed just 1 point after 3 matches to start the season, and now find themselves at the bottom of the NWSL league standings. Their two losses were at the hands of Portland and Washington, while they managed a draw with Sky Blue FC to start the season.
The Red Stars are led by veteran captain Lori Chalupny, as well as Canadian veteran goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. LeBlanc earned a shutout in the Red Stars first match, while the team has only allowed one goal overall in their first two matches, proving to thus far be the stingiest defense in the league. The Red Stars lone goal scored this season came off the combination play of rookies Vanessa DiBernardo and Julie Johnston on a corner kick.
FC Kansas City features Illinois-native Jen Buczkowski in the midfield, as well as a slew of U.S. Women’s National Team members in Nicole Barnhart, reigning 2013 NWSL MVP Lauren Holiday, Amy Rodriguez, and Becky Sauerbrunn. The Red Stars traded defender Amy LePeilbet to FCKC earlier in the season, but she has yet to feature after returning from knee surgery.
The two teams met earlier this year on March 22 in a preseason exhibition match that took place in St. Louis, Missouri, and ended in a 1-1 tie, with goals from Red Stars Alyssa Mautz and Kansas City’s Melissa Henderson.
Red Stars vs. FC Kansas City kicks off Wednesday at 7:00 pm CT at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Kansas City, and will be streamed live, for free. Fans can also follow the Red Stars official gameday Twitter account for live in-game updates: @redstarslive.
