Red Stars in the Olympics: Christen Press Earns First Olympic Start

Press plays entire 90 minutes for United States in draw to Colombia

Group G: USA vs. Colombia, 2-2

The United States Women’s National Team won Group G with a 2-2 draw to Colombia in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Chicago forward Christen Press earned her first Olympic start for the United States Women’s National Team.

The match-up history between the United States and Colombia was completely one-sided to the U.S., as the team had never lost or conceded a goal to Colombia. However, in the 26th minute Colombian Cataline Usme would finish a free kick outside the box that would go through Hope Solo’s legs and put the side up 1-0 over the United States.

The United States continued to put pressure on the Colombia backline and came close to finding the equalizer on multiple occasions, but it would be Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn that would tie the match going into the second half. In the 60th minute, Dunn would once again be involved in the United States goal, this time assisting to Mallory Pugh. Pugh, just 18-years-old, became the youngest player in United States history to score in the Olympics.

With seconds remaining in the match the United States would concede a goal once again off a set piece from Usme that would end the game, 2-2.

Julie Johnston started the United States Olympic opener, but is nursing a groin injury, while goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was available if needed.

United States earned a first-place finish (7 points) to advance to the knockout stages out of Group G, with wins over New Zealand (2-0) and France (1-0). The Olympic quarterfinal match-up will be the United States facing Sweden on Friday at 11 AM (Central). Join the Chicago Red Stars staff and Local 134 at A.J.
