CHICAGO – The Chicago Red Stars tonight closed out their 2014 National Women’s Soccer League preseason with a 0-0 draw against DePaul University, and a 2-0 victory over Oakland University (MI) at Village of Lisle – Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, IL. Red Stars midfielder Alyssa Mautz and team captain Lori Chaulpny netted the team’s pair of goals for the evening.
With tonight’s goal Alyssa Mautz has scored for the Red Stars in every 2014-preseason match. Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc earns her third shutout of preseason.
In the first 45 minutes, the Red Stars dominated much of the play against DePaul. Forward Adriana Leon tallied 4 shots on goal in the first 15 minutes, though was unable to find the net. Captain Lori Chalupny also had her fair share of looks on goal with a great opportunity in the 36th minute, off a through ball from defender Julie Johnston into the box that was then cleared by a DePaul defender. DePaul fought back connecting several plays together for a strong attack toward the final 5 minutes of play. Despite both teams best efforts, the Red Stars and DePaul finished with a 0-0 draw at the end of 45 minutes.
The second half of the split match had the Red Stars taking on Oakland University (MI). The Red Stars made some changes from the first game, including moving Johnston into the midfield and substituting Zakiya Bywaters for Jen Hoy. In the 21st minute Oakland’s goalkeeper sent a misclear toward Red Stars forward Hayley Brock who found midfielder Alyssa Mautz for first goal of the night. Just a few minutes later Chalupny added another point on the board, with a goal in the 34th minute. The Red Stars continued to push forward, challenging the Oakland keeper several more times before the close of the match.
“It was fun to get out on our home field for the first time this season and see our fans,” said Red Stars Captain Lori Chalupny. “We faced two quality opponents (In DePaul and Oakland), with two very different playing styles. It was good for us to try and figure them both out in quick matches.”
The Red Stars open their NWSL 2014 regular season schedule against Western New York Flash on April 19 at 5:45pm CT at Toyota Park, following a match between MLS sides Chicago Fire and New England Revolution. The Red Stars will return to the Village of Lisle Benedictine University Sports Complex on April 26 at 7pm when they take on Washington.
