Red Stars Down Under: One Showcases in W-League Opening Weekend

CHICAGO – Australia’s Westfield W-League opened with their 10th season this past weekend, as Arin Gilliland and the Newcastle Jets held onto a 2-1 victory against Western Sydney Wanderers. Danielle Colaprico, Alyssa Mautz, Katie Naughton and Adelaide United received a bye in Round 1.

Entering her second season for the Jets, Gilliland played all 90 minutes of the first game as a midfielder.

Newcastle found the first goal in the 14th minute as Washington Spirit loan Katie Stengel tallied a close range shot to the back of the net. Gilliland nearly earned an assist as she set up captain Emily van Egmond, but the 40-yard shot was eventually blocked.

The Wanderers tied the match in the 77th minute after Erica Halloway headed the ball past Jets goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom. But just a minute later, Newcastle took back their one-goal lead with a Jenna Kingsley header off a set piece, becoming the game winner.

Round 2:
Western Sydney Wanderers (0-1-0) vs. Adelaide United (0-0-0)
Newcastle Jets (1-0-0) vs. Sydney FC (0-1-0)

Red Stars Stats:
Arin Gilliland (Newcastle Jets) – 90 minutes
Danielle Colaprico (Adelaide United) – Bye
Alyssa Mautz (Adelaide United) – Bye
Katie Naughton (Adelaide United) – Bye
