Red Stars Down Under: Newcastle Tops Adelaide in 2-1 Victory

CHICAGO – Arin Gilliland and the Newcastle Jets jumped back up into playoff contention after defeating Adelaide United 2-1 in Round 5 action.

Newcastle took the lead in the 32nd minute, as Katie Stengel earned her fourth goal of the season. The lone goal would be the only score in the first half.

Tori Huster doubled the Jets’ lead four minutes into the second half after her free kick sailed into the back of the net. It took just two minutes for Red Stars defender Katie Naughton to put Adelaide on the board with a header off Chicago teammate Danielle Colaprico’s free kick.

The Newcastle win brought the Jets up to fourth place, tying three teams with nine points, keeping an eye on a semifinal match. Adelaide dropped to eighth with three points, tied with Sydney FC, who sits on the bottom of the ladder.
