Chicago Earns a Point in Washington after 1-1 Draw

CHICAGO – The Red Stars battled to a 1-1 draw on the road against the Washington Spirit. Alyssa Mautz tallied her third goal of the season, while both Julie Ertz and Sam Kerr saw their season debuts tonight.

Starting off slow, the Red Stars fell early on in the fourth minute as Francisca Ordega gave Washington the lead. But despite being down, the Red Stars took control for the rest of the first half.

Chicago found the equalizer after a Sam Kerr shot was deflected and fell to the feet of Alyssa Mautz to draw the game in the 20th minute.

Between Chicago and Washington, each team earned several counter attacks, but none were good enough to get the go-ahead goal. The Red Stars finished the half with eight shots to the Spirit’s three, while also earning majority of possession in the first half.

In the second half, Chicago held much of the possession, creating multiple chances inside the box as Red Stars midfielder Julie Ertz also made her season debut coming on the field in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Despite Chicago’s eight shots, the Red Stars nor the Spirit could find the game winner, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.

The Red Stars will return to Toyota Park for their second midweek game on Wednesday, May 2, to take on the Orlando Pride for the first time this season. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and go90 app. Tickets are available here.
