CHICAGO – The Red Stars will travel to Seattle for the second of their three-game series with the Reign. Kickoff will begin at 9:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 28 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
Coming off their sixth victory, Chicago extended their undefeated streak to seven games, the longest in the league so far. In last Sunday’s game, the Red Stars pulled it together in the second half to defeat Sky Blue 2-1 in a come-from-behind victory.
Sky Blue’s Madison Tiernan scored early in the third minute of the match, the quickest goal that Chicago conceded this season. However, Chicago would find two goals within four minutes in the second half that helped continue their undefeated streak at Toyota Park in 2017. Vanessa DiBernardo notched her third goal of the season, second most on the team this season, as Sofia Huerta earned her second goal and her team-high third assist of the season.
Still conceding the least amount of goals in the NWSL with nine, Alyssa Naeher and the Chicago backline will look to keep that number after defending Seattle’s Megan Rapinoe, who tops the league with five goals, while Beverly Yanez and Nahomi Kawasumi contributed three goals each, with the latter leading the league with six assists.
The Reign’s goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer has continued to lead the league with 47 saves, but remains to have only one shutout on the season. Although Seattle kept most of the possession in the two team’s last matchup, Chicago outshot Seattle 21-10 as Christen Press led the team to victory with the lone goal of the game.
After a fourth-minute red card against FC Kansas City, Seattle will be without veteran defender Lauren Barnes. But despite being down a player for most of the match and a goal in the 16th minute, the Reign rallied back and scored an equalizer to leave the match with a 1-1 draw.
Chicago will start off their four-game road trip in Seattle for their first midweek game on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. CT. Fans can watch live on the go90 app or NWSLsoccer.com.
