CHICAGO  – The Chicago Red Stars announced today that they will open up their 2014 NWSL season in a doubleheader with Major League Soccer counterpart the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Saturday, April 19. The Red Stars, featuring  U.S. Women’s National Team players Amy LePeilbet and Christen Press, as well as Captain Lori Chalupny, will open their 2014 NWSL season against the world’s leading goal scorer Abby Wambach, and the Western New York Flash.

Kick off for the Red Stars match will begin at approximately 5:45 p.m. CT, immediately following Chicago Fire’s match against New England Revolution at 3 p.m. CT (NBC Sports)

“This is something we’ve been dreaming about since the Red Stars were founded,” said Red Stars General Manager Alyse LaHue. “It is really special for Chicago sports fans to see a men’s and women’s team collaborating on an initiative like this. We thank the Chicago Fire for welcoming us into their home and are excited about future possibilities to come.”

This marks the Red Stars first visit back to Toyota Park in four years, after having called the stadium home during their 2009-2010 season competing in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).

“We are excited to host the Red Stars for their season opener on April 19 at Toyota Park,” said Fire Chief Operating Officer Atul Khosla. “Like the Fire, the Red Stars play a critical role in growing the game here in Chicago and we look forward to more opportunities to partner together in the future.”
