CHICAGO – The Red Stars ended their undefeated streak after falling to Orlando Pride 2-0 in the first contest between the two teams in 2018.
With both sides sharing the possession throughout the first half, Orlando was able to take the lead at the halfway mark. Sydney Leroux picked up the ball running inside the box, but with a short pass back, Chioma Ubogagu took no time to put the ball in the back of the net on the first touch.
Australian international Sam Kerr led Chicago with two shots, both skillfully getting past defenders but shooting just off frame.
After the start of the second half, lightening delayed the match for nearly 25 minutes. But once back on the field from the delay, Chicago took charge and Kerr narrowly missed a header on frame off a corner kick.
Continuing the pressure, Danielle Colaprico found Sarah Gorden spreading wide of the 18-yard box. Controlling the ball, Gorden skipped it across the face of the goal, narrowly missing the far post after being deflected away from goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.
Second-half substitutes gave the Red Stars a spark, as Michele Vasconcelos tallied an open shot from the top of the box, but rocketed just wide of the post.
Orlando pressured back as a ball inside the Red Stars box forced goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher off her line. With Naeher missing the ball with a slide, substitute Rachel Hill softly tapped the ball into the open net widening the Pride’s lead.
Chicago will once again turn right around and travel to North Carolina to play the Courage for the first time in the three-match series of 2018. Kickoff will be set for Saturday, May 6, at 2:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on NWSL app and go 90 app.
